2024 Greenways Program Update
Parks Design & Development Division
The City of Bellingham Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to announce the purchase of two new
properties through its Greenways Program. Over 116 acres of forestland and wetlands along Squalicum Creek
were purchased from the Washington Department of Natural Resources and will provide land for a future
neighborhood park and trail connections to an eastern extension of the Bay to Baker Trail. Additionally, a
3-acre parcel at the eastern end of Telegraph Road was purchased to allow for a critical trail segment that
will provide a connection from the King Mountain neighborhood to Sunset Pond Park, the Bay to Baker Trail,
and south to Barkley Village.
Bellingham's Greenways Program is a property tax levy that funds the acquisition and development of parks,
open spaces, and trails. Since it began in 1990, the City has purchased more than 3,200 acres with levy funds.
In November 2023, voters approved Greenways 5 Levy, which continues the program for 10 more years. This
levy also funds park maintenance and climate resiliency efforts, including energy efficiency upgrades for park
facilities, stewardship, trail improvements for alternative transportation, and urban forestry.
