WELCOME, WINTER 2024! Cordata Park Pavilion. Photo by Jonathan Schilk "I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, "Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again." — Lewis Carroll "To appreciate the beauty of a snowflake, it is necessary to stand out in the cold." — Anonymous Fairhaven Park Gateway. Photo by Josh Neyman Fall brought many sunny crisp days and stunning autumn colors to our parks and trails. The leaves have mostly fallen, the frost is slick on roads, trails, and windshields, and it is time to enjoy all the fun winter activities in our amazing City and region. Fingers crossed for snow on the winter holidays, and balmy days thereafter to make winter travel and exploring easy and accessible. This winter is bringing long-anticipated park projects to fruition at both ends of town. Up north, Phase Two of Cordata Community Park broke ground a few months ago and is anticipated to be open by February. The new north trail is complete, connecting the Community Park to Horton Road and Julianna Park. The park pavilion is scheduled to be opened by March, offering new reservable indoor space for programs, events, and gatherings. An outdoor amphitheater will host music on the north side for years to come, and ADA accessible pickleball courts and a full-sized basketball court will keep people of all ages and abilities active and healthy. Our recreation staff is inspired by this beautiful new park facility, so expect to see exciting new opportunities as we settle into programming this incredible park. At the south end of town, the iconic and historic gateway structure at Fairhaven Park is finally getting replaced. The stone structure, chosen by the community from a selection of design options, is nearing completion. Although not as grand as the former gateway, the new stone gateway includes a light fixture, and will welcome park visitors for many, many years. Thanks to everyone for your patience as we move forward on our work program. Sometimes things take longer than expected (like the pedestrian bridge at Arroyo Park), but please know we are doing our best to build things that serve our community both now and into the future. Have a great winter — stay warm and get out and play! Nicole C. Oliver Parks & Recreation Director Director's Letter cob.org/parks • (360) 778-7000 1
