Our Sikh Neighbors:
Introduction to Sikhs and Sikhi
The Sikh Faith is the 5th largest
religion on earth but few in the
West know much about it. In
this hour presentation a local
Sikh university student, Rose
Kalur, will share basic informa-
tion about Sikhs, their religion,
and Sikhs in Whatcom County.
Here are a few questions Rose
will answer in this session: Where are Sikhs from? Why
do Sikhs wear turbans? What are the basic beliefs and
practices of the Sikh religion? How many Sikh Gurdwaras
(temples) are there in Whatcom County? How can
non-Sikhs experience Langar – vegetarian food made
and served in Sikh community kitchens? What is April's
Vaisakhi Day Celebration, and why should everyone
attend (when public functions become safe again)? This
session will also have a Q&A.
FACILITY RENTALS
Bellingham Parks & Recreation is now accepting
reservations for limited outdoor spaces and special
events, scheduled for June 1 and beyond!
Details include:
• Outdoor facility reservations are limited to reservable
picnic shelters located throughout the park system.
• Indoor facilities are not available until after Labor Day
weekend, except for the barn at Woodstock Farm.
• Depot Market Square will continue to host the
Bellingham Farmer's Market.
• Athletic fields and facilities are available for limited
programming run by school districts and other youth
sports programs. These programs follow strict state
Department of Health guidelines and provide staffing
and oversight for the activities.
Applications for events open to the public, commercial
events, runs and races, requests for open space, or beer
gardens will require a separately executed contract,
insurance, and a COVID safety plan that demonstrates
compliance with state guidelines. Requests must be
submitted at least 30 days in advance. Approval is
dependent upon supporting information submitted with
application, facility/park availability, peak public use,
staff availability. Larger community events requiring
street closures or additional requirements will be
reviewed and processed at the City's Permit Center.
