Bellingham Parks and Recreation is thrilled to announce that Fountain Plaza Construction is scheduled to begin mid -March 2020 and end by end of June 2020. Located at the junction of Broadway and Meridian Streets, Fountain Plaza provided fresh water for animals and livestock travelling from Bellingham to the county and beyond to British Columbia. The property was dedicated as a public space with the condition that water continue to be provided for “man and beast.” The advent of the streetcar led to the evolution of this “Fountain Square” as the center of a new commercial area at the convergence of the Cornwall, Lettered Streets and Columbia neighborhoods, now known as the Fountain District. Fountain Plaza continues to serve as a gateway to the commercial district and a respite for all modes of travel, including children traveling through the area on foot or bicycle to and from Whatcom Middle School. It continues to be the only public space within the urban village. The project includes a new fountain and fountain system, pavement seat wall, improved bus stop, turf grass and landscape planting . https://www.cob.org/gov/projects/Pages/FountainPlaza.aspx #fountaindistrict #bellingham
