This issue is so full of good ideas and options for fun that it is likely to cause a positive, sunny mood to descend upon you regardless of the temperature! Your Bellingham Parks & Recreation Department is staffing up for the upcoming busy season, and we have had great results in hiring, but we still need more! Please check out cob.org/jobs if you are looking for a great employment opportunity! This summer will be very busy for construction projects in our parks. We finally have permits to repair the bridge at Arroyo Park and are planning this work to happen in the summer fish window. Also coming this year, phase two of Cordata Park, featuring pickleball courts, a pavilion and amphitheater. A new playground is coming to Lorraine Ellis Park, and we are demolishing the barely standing historic Whatcom Creek Trail Trestle in upper Whatcom Falls Park. A new outdoor classroom and native plant garden is underway in the Hundred Acre Wood along the trail between 18th Street and the upper Fairhaven Park picnic shelter. This project is a partnership with Recreation Northwest to create an Outdoor Classroom at the entrance to the Hundred Acre Wood. The primary goal is to create an outdoor learning environment with dedicated spaces and interpretive signage to connect the community to nature. Enjoy the beautiful busy season in our incredible park system! Get out and discover a new park or trail that you haven't yet tried. See our park guide for new ideas! Sincerely, Nicole C.
