A GREAT PLACE TO MAKE YOUR COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS Depot Market Square was developed through a public/ private partnership as a regional example of recycling and environmentally conscious construction. The beautiful beams and arches were salvaged from demolition of the Highway 99 bridge over the Skagit River between Mt. Vernon and Burlington. On the south side of the building, a rain garden collects and filters rain water. The facility pays homage to its historical significance and Railroad Avenue's namesake. The old classic Victorian-style depot was demolished in 1945. The new structure is also home to a bronze locomotive bell dating back to the early 1900's. Such bells were standard equipment on every locomotive traveling down what is now Railroad Avenue. Busy Market days are reminiscent of the time that the Avenue was crowded with tracks and travelers, and rang with the sound of steam locomotives.
