8 summer 2015 leisure guide 360-778-7000 KID'S FISHING DERBY A free derby sponsored by the Northwest Washington Steelheaders. Parents are welcome to help bait and cast but each child must reel in their own fish. Children must catch their limit of 2 to be eligible for a prize. Hot dogs and pop are provided free to everyone. We ask that participants use alternate transportation as much as possible. Overflow parking is available at Bloedel Donovan Park. DAY/DATE: Saturday, May 9 AGES: 14 and younger TIME: ages 9 and under from 9–10am ages 10-14 from 11am–12 noon LOCATION: Whatcom Falls Park COST: Free COORDINATOR: Lance Romo MOTHER'S DAY AT BIG ROCK Celebrate Mother's Day of Big Rock. Walk the garden trails discovering blooming azaleas and rhododendrons, and over 30 of the city's permanent sculpture collection. • This free event is the open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. • Live music by Spinnaker Trombones from 1–3pm. • Plein Air artists will be painting in the park. Their art will be for sale as a benefit for Big Rock Garden Park. Plein Air artists include Louise Perram, Lyz Staman, Trish Harding, Erin Libby, Laurel Baldwin, Pat Stiles and Sherri Guiton. • Local published poets of the Whatcom Poetry Series will be reading. Poets will be Luther Allen, Jim Bertolino, Anita K. Boyle, Jeni Cottrell, Caitlyn Jans, Jacob Jans, Judy Kleinberg, Andy McBride, Kate Miller, Kevin Murphy, CJ Prince, and Carla Shafer. Special thanks to the Friends of Big Rock Garden Park and the Bellingham Arts Commission and Bellingham Parks & Recreation who are sponsoring this event. LOCATION: Big Rock Garden Park, on Sylvan Street, 3 blocks north of Alabama Street. Parking on site is only for special needs and is very limited. Park at Bloedel Dovovan Park and ride the free shuttle! First shuttle leaves the parking lot at 12:45pm. BIKE TO WORK & SCHOOL DAY is FRIDAY, MAY 15 Bicycling is fun — but it's also great transportation! See for yourself on May 15 when Whatcom County celebrates Bike to Work and School Day! Thousands of people of all aes will be out on the streets and trails on their bicycles. Get your bike out, pump up the tires and enjoy the camaraderie. Baker Rock & Gem Club invites you to its annual RRR Rock Swap and Sale. Rocks, minerals, fossils, gemstones, jewelry and lapidary equipment can be bought, sold or swapped. Proceeds help fund the club's WWU scholarship program. Thank you to the Bellingham Parks & Recreation Department for their support.
