PARK OPERATIONS UPDATE Park Operations staff have been working hard over the past few months. The dedicated members of our Grounds, Facilities, Structures & Utilities, Cemetery, Trails, Park Improvements, Urban Forestry, and Stewardship teams work in all kinds of weather conditions and are looking forward to the warmer and drier Spring & Summer months ahead! Some recent notable accomplishments include: • Repaired Little Squalicum Pier abutment • Completed restoration of log structure at Van Wyck Park • Replaced decking on Derby Pond bridge in Whatcom Falls Park • Recovered and disposed of derelict boats from Taylor Dock and Boulevard Park • Updated HVAC controls for increased efficiency at Fairhaven Park, Cordata Park, and Bloedel Donovan Park • Completed full restoration of Salmon donation bench at Derby Pond • Replaced and repaired boardwalk guardrails throughout parks system • Inspected/assessed bridges and buildings throughout parks system • Completed roadside pruning of trees and shrubs at Broadway and Highland Heights Parks to improve maintenance and traffic safety • Removed invasive species such as Himalayan blackberry, English ivy and English holly from numerous parks during Parks Volunteer Program's Saturday Work Parties • Pruned 150 Honey Locust and London Plane trees on Railroad Avenue to expose business signs, provide clearance of buildings, and remove deadwood and low branches over street parking • Planted 115 new park trees to target low canopy cover areas of town, and to mitigate removals within critical habitat areas • Responded to December weather events throughout the city's parks, open spaces and streets • Completed Office Renovations at the Woburn Street Operations Center • Demolished old septic tank, backfilled, and installed two new risers at Telegraph Road property • Replaced electrical distribution and meter at Cornwall South restroom building • Completed scanning of Bayview Cemetery burial records • Pruned Oak trees at Civic Complex near Joe Martin Field to remove large deadwood and broken branches before the Bells Baseball season begins • Re-keyed entire parks system with upgraded and more efficient lock system • Installed new blinds at Maritime Heritage Park pavilion • Completed stormwater system and catch basin inspections • Repaired waterline at Woodstock Farm in partnership with archaeologists and Tribes • Installed ridge cap with zinc at Squalicum Creek dog park restroom to minimize moss growth Facility Rental Info Park Highlights SPRING/SUMMER PLAYBOOK 2026 | BELLINGHAM PARKS & RECREATION 40
