Park Operations staff have stayed active over the last few months responding to winter storms and freezing temperatures which did negatively impact our turf, plants, trees, and our plumbing systems in several parks. We are looking forward to longer, warmer days and to the start of the growing season. Some of our notable accomplishments include: • Cleaned out the Woburn Street property in preparation for the re-development project. • Successfully detached and removed the historic cupola off the shop building which will be restored and placed back onsite after the project is complete. • Temporarily relocated the plant nursery to restored property at Happy Valley Neighborhood Park. • Completed upgrades to our garbage and recycling drop off area. • Resurfaced a popular section of the South Bay Trail at Boulevard Park. • Responded to several incidents of intentional turf damage. • Completed several plumbing repairs in park restrooms and facilities. • Completed the construction of the new King Mountain Community Garden at Van Wyck Park for the King Mountain Neighborhood with irrigation lines, tool shed, fencing, and raised beds. • Installed several new information signs for the Birchwood Neighborhood as part of a Small & Simple Grant. • Constructed four new kiosks for trailheads at the Sehome Hill Arboretum. • Completed administrative updates and improved processes for the Park Volunteer Program. • Coordinated eight volunteer work parties which attracted 350 volunteers who planted 819 native trees and shrubs over the course of their combined 1,386 hours. • Installed several new donation benches and trees. • Remodeled former garage into new herbicide storage area and installed mechanic's hydraulic lift at the Lake Padden Golf Course Maintenance Shop. • Installed a new Portland Loo restroom at Waypoint Park • Installed new park gates at Lake Padden and Squalicum Creek.
